‘Engagement’ Key to Securing Future of Safe Scaffolding Says NASC President & TRAD Group CEO Des Moore

TRAD Group to share ‘Common Sense Engagement’ Guide with every employee

Zero fatalities and the lowest figures on record for major injuries (17) and incidents (89) were amongst the headline achievements reported in the 2018 Safety Report of the National Access & Scaffolding Confederation (NASC). NASC accounts for over 80% of the UK scaffolding industry and the Report was emphasized at the trade body’s annual conference – themed ‘The Future of Safe Scaffolding’ – held on May 31st at London’s Chamber of Shipping.

In his address to members, NASC President and TRAD Group CEO, Des Moore acclaimed the industry’s collective achievements, but highlighted the way ahead: “Together, NASC members can be proud of their improving safety record, but we must be equally committed to securing the future of safe scaffolding. This can only be achieved through compelling and consistent engagement with scaffolding teams and construction clients.”

Des reinforced this call to action with news that the various safety-related programmes running across the TRAD Group will be reinforced through distribution to every employee of its ‘Common Sense Engagement’ guidebook, covering four key modules:

‘Knowledge Inspired’ – explaining the 12 week mentoring programme for new supervisors that is delivered by colleagues with 5 or more years’ experience

‘Play it Safe’ – designed to instill a team based appreciation of safety

‘Visual Standards’ – pictorial visuals of all key safety practices to avoid misinterpretation of guidelines

‘Diversity & Inclusion’ – creating a culture based on diversity and inclusion is vital to teamwork, a foundation of safe scaffolding

Des highlighted the importance of an industry-wide approach, “Scaffolding is becoming a real safety success story – so let’s build on it. The TRAD Group and other responsible industry players recognize that securing safety is the foundation of relationships with colleagues working at height every day. At TRAD Group, the safety of our people is paramount and it is a key facet of our social responsibility.”
